I don't have much information on the 79th EMM, but a few years back I plodded through Record of Service cards at the State Archives (before they went online), and determined that the counties of origin for the unit included Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, Scott, Bollinger, and Mississippi. I certainly agree with Bruce that the men who served in this unit, especially the ones who were from the counties other than Cape G, must have been of an unusual character and temperament.

The only recommendation I can give you in regard to determining engagements, skirmishes, ambushes, etc., is to go to the Archives and pull out the microfilm for the unit's muster rolls. This is a source of information that is wholly overlooked by researchers, leading them to the mistaken conclusion that there are no, or few, EMM activity reports in the historical record. I was able to use the muster rolls to some effect in regard to my book on Sam Hildebrand. The muster rolls were monthly reports, sorted out by company, that sometimes included comments, sometimes very detailed comments, on individual troops in the unit as well as actions and activities the unit was involved in. EMM officers very rarely made written reports up the chain of command, but they generally made regular comments in the muster rolls.
