Co L, 8th PEMM ?

Call me a flea, i.e. the last thing to leave a dying dog....

Bruce and Kirby's comments got me to hunting down the Hildebrand / George Hart murder. First let me say I do not believe Hildebrand was referring to Capt Benjamin Lee Bowman. With that said I went on a hunt for the pricipals in the story.

Seems that George Hart was one of the younger sons of Charles Hart (b 1795, Kentucky) who located to St. Francois County in the 1830's and was a neighbor of Henderson Murphy. George was born in St. Francis Co in 1837.

Hildebrand reports tha Hart killed a Capt Bowman's brother while on a scout. So I went looking for Hart's service and where and what he may have been up to. As Kirby reports in his book, Hart was a member of Co B 68th EMM. However he was transferred to Co L, 8th PEMM May 23 1863. So I went looking for Co L info and found an intersting pattern...

First it appears to be a company of non-comms, Corporals and Sergents. The vast majority of service records indicate the "privates" were lost or deserted or absent without leave or sick in June, July, August of 1863. Every listing I looked at that lasted beyond August 1863 (not all but a bunch) indicate and I quote "on detached service since Oct 22, 1863". So the question arises what were the boys of Co L, 8th PEMM doing in the fall and winter of 1863?

Inquiring minds, etc... :>)
