Any topic covering the 1st Mo. Volunteer Cavalry draws my attention as I am looking for any new information concerning the regiment.
As I had stated previously, I own a Remington old model .44 revolver that was issued to a William H. Bass, bugler of the 1st Mo. Cav. Co. I. & documented by the Springfield research service, gleaned from detailed company records.
Co. I & Co. H were in the 2nd battalion & saw mostly the same action.
As to the statement I made about many Indiana boys in the regiment, was based on written letters by Bass when he applied for a pension based on his service & disability.
Bass stated in his correspondence & cooperated by witnesses for his application for a pension, that a recruiter from the regiment recruited volunteers in Indianapolis. He & his cousin volunteered & rode a train with other Indiana boys to St. Louis & then to Jefferson barracks.
I was quite fortunate in that I received 101 pages of detailed information from the National Archives including copies of many letters written by Bass, witnesses, Doctors & the Pension board. With that info, I also obtained much info from the state archives & census info.
The Springfield Research Service was invaluable as it obtained the info concerning issuance of the revolver to Bass, & besides the Dyer compendium & National Archives, gratitude is mostly due to those that kept impeccable company records which was sorely lacking from many other regiments & companies.
