President Truman expressed his family's position and his own personal belief in a personal letter to John T. Riley of LOOK magazine dated November 17, 1960: "My sympathies and all my family were on the side of the South. But I think the organization of the greatest Republic in the history of the world was worth all the sacrifices made to save it." (Extract of letter from OFF THE RECORD: THE PRIVATE PAPERS OF HARRY S. TRUMAN [page 391], edited by Robert H. Ferrell, University of Missouri Press, Columbia, Missouri, 1980.)

Truman was instrumental in the founding of the Civil War Round Table of Kansas City in 1958. The CWRTKC has honored its most famous member by naming an award after him. The organization periodically presents the Harry S. Truman Award for outstanding scholarship and/or preservation efforts related to the Civil War.
