In Response To: 46th Missouri Infantry ()

Jim,

I looked in Frederick Dyer's "A Compendium of the War of the Rebellion" volume 2 of 3 to get a thumbnail history of the 46th MO Infantry Regiment. (This set is located in nearly all libraries, usually in the reference section. I cannot recall if this work is online now.) It says in Dyer's regarding the general assignments of this regiment:

"Organized at Springfield, Mo., August to November 1864, for six months. Attached to District of Southwest Missouri, Dept. of Missouri, to March, 1865. 2nd Brigade, 1st Sub-District, District of Middle Tennessee, Dept. of the Cumberland, to May 1865."

This portion is followed by a longer paragraph detailing certain actions portions of the regiment or the whole regiment experienced in SW and NE MO and a little bit just over the border in Arkansas.

In larger libraries and college libraries you can find Broadfoot Publishing Company's 1990s massive 100-volume set called "Supplement to the 'Official Records'" published in Wilmington, NC. Part 2 (most of the 100 or so volumes) called "Records of Events" contains regimental histories of most Civil War regiments and many smaller units of both sides arranged alphabetically by state. The Missouri volume contained the 46th is Volume 38. I had somebody from the library help me with this one, and, sadly, all it says about Company I is: "Stationed at Ozark County, [MO] September 7, 1864-February 28, 1865." You will need to look for this Volume 38 and see what it says about what the regimental staff reported. Hopefully, it will tell more about Company I.

I wish you good hunting.

Bruce Nichols
