Re: 37th EMM and Major A.V.E. Johnston

This seems to be a follow up to the events described by Mr. Ross. The original is in the EMM papers at the Missouri State Archives.

Brig. Genl. Th. J. Bartholow,

General,

I have the honor to report to you that for the last three days, a portion of my Regt. under command of Lt. Col. Finley have been scouting through the district of country bordering on Pike and Lincoln in connection with a detachment of the 2d Provisional Regt. under command of Major Johnson [sic] without having succeeded in finding any traces of the villains who fired on my men. They have doubtless scattered for a time. Major Johnson has had one fellow shot from evidence that he was in the brush with the men who fired on our Militia. He set fire to one house which has been notorious as a rendezvous for bushwhackers & in which was found contraband goods of different kinds. The Major has the owner of the property now under arrest, & will doubtless //p. 2// "give him his rights." My men have all returned to their homes, leaving Maj. Johnson at Louisville in the County. The Major will remain several days in that section watching the movements of the bushwhackers.

I am General Very

Respty. Your Obt. Servt.

C.W. Parker, Col.

27th Regt. E.M.M.
