Re: Jim Jackson & David Plunket

J. Y.,

Perhaps it would have been better if I had not given you the quick reply, as I was tired. That accounts for the mention of "Jim Carter" who was supposed to have been "Jim Jackson."

This seems to be a case where you have given me much more information that I have for you. I appreciate the info you provided about the Davis County, IA raid, and I will look more into that.

I scratched on David Plunket (or Plunkett). I can't find anything on a man by that name, and especially on a southerner or guerrilla by that name killed in or near Glasgow, Howard County, in 1864.

My information tells me that Jim Jackson was a tagalong to the guerrilla war in Missouri, since he wasn't a Missouian and didn't even live there. Jackson was a Texan who had recently changed his address to Bourbon County, KY before he followed some of the Missouri guerrillas back to Missouri from their winter sojourn in Texas. I suppose the Missouri war sounded like fun to the guy and he thought he would join in. Therefore, it is possible that he brought a few friends along, and maybe this David Plunket was one of them.

I found lots of Plunket and Plunkett families living in Knox, Chariton, and Audrain Counties in the 1860 census not far from where Jim Jackson operated in 1864 and 1865. There were others households by that name in Montgomery, Jackson, and Lafayette Counties where lots of southern men lived who later became guerrillas during the war. I found no David in any of those households. This is not definitive, as census-takers commonly missed active young men who lived wherever they happened to hang their hats.

If I were to find David Plunket later, I will attempt to get back with you.
