The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Jim Jackson & David Plunket

Bruce,

Just to add to the information of Jim Jackson.. I recently purchased "Other Noted Guerrillas in the Civil War" by Larry Wood and he devotes a chapter in the book to Jim Jackson.. He states that Jim Jackson was part of the raid into Ohio and Indiana by General John Morgan.. Jackson was apparently captured and placed in Camp Douglas near Chicago.. He escaped and ended up in northern Missouri and took up guerrilla fighting after joining up with Holtzclaw briefly..

Like you , I find it odd that a man whose roots are Bourbon County Kentucky would not stay and fight in the guerrilla conflict closer to home since Kentucky was rife with it.. Woods does state that Jackson was born in Texas but, raised in Kentucky.. Was it possible that after he escaped Camp Douglas he went all the way back to Texas and ran into Missouri guerrillas wintering there and liked the idea of going back with them?.. I dont know.. But, it does seem odd to go into a guerrilla conflict where there is "no dog in the fight" so to speak.. He did most of his fighting that summer with Jim Anderson (Bill's brother).. He apparently adopted the Anderson boys flair for colorful guerrilla shirts since when he was captured in June of '65 the captors found a colorful guerrilla overshirt that they deemed worthy to send to the "cabinet of curiousities and preserved as a rare specimen for the benefit of the after ages".. In jest I am sure.. Larry Wood's book is very well documented and a interesting read for those interested in the lesser know guerrilas in the conflict in Missouri.. You may have already known this but, I found it very interesting..
