In reviewing the posts on Holtzclaws/Holsclaws, I'm glad someone mentioned B.C. Holtsclaw's book. The Holtzclaw family has been researched through the Germanna Foundation in VA. Hans Jacob Holtzclaw, the 1714 German immigrant, had numerous grandsons named Jacob. See John Blankenbaker's chart of the first 3 Holtzclaw generations. John's notes are searchable for specific names. On page 304, B.C. Holtsclaw suggest that James (1797)was the 12th Child or a grandson of Jacob and Susannah (Susannah would have been 51 Years old !) There are several James' in other generations.
I descend from Hans Jacob's second youngest son (second wife) (page 303 ff.) Jacob Holtzclaw and Susannah Thomas. They settled in present day Garrard Co. (Lincoln) KY about 1776. Jacob had raised a crop of corn by 1776. He also appears in some of the Early KY forts. See Sandy Gorin's Notes on KY. They have a son Jacob who had many land and court documents in the area also. My line continues through their oldest son Elijah and Sara Collier who moved to Trimble Co. KY. Their grandson, also Elijah, enlisted in Company E Fourth Ky. Cavalry, C. S. A., in 1862.
Julie (Hans Jacob, Jacob, Elijah, Alexander, Elijah, and Nora Holsclaw)
