Re: Moses McCoy at Richfield and Plattsburg?

Thanks John,
Yes, all the information you provided I also agree with. I have from state archives in Jefferson City a copy of Lurena's statement before she took the oath. Yes I also beleive by the statement, she made some eyes roll. By the statement she cant understand why she was arrested and that she feeds all who come to her door hungry. She did not think this to be disloyal. She also goes on to say that she was for the Union but after the battle of Lexington, she changed.

Other than Richfield and Plattsburg the only other mention I can find is from "Eakin and Hale" "Branded as Rebels" who refer to Moses McCoy custodian of one of Quantrill's camps in the Missouri River Bluffs three miles from Sibley.

I am just trying to figure out how Moses McCoy figured into the Missouri Civil War. Was he a Partisan Ranger? Was he under the command of William Quantrill? Was he in the service of Gen. Shelby? Was he in the service of Fernando Scott? In Lurena's article she mentions Fernando Scott and seems to have great respect for him. I believe Fernando Scott was in charge of the Richfield fight, and Plattsburg, before being killed at Wesport.

As you seem to know the area, and it is my old stomping grounds. Sibley is not far south across the river from present day Missouri City. In the articles written by Lurena and published in Confederate Veteran. Lurena makes several statements about Moses being south of the river. Again I hesitate as to what is fact and fiction in these articles. In these articles Lurena talks about the banishment and being taken to Pine Bluff, Arkansas. From Pine Bluff they were taken to Monticello and stayed until the end of the war.

Moses died in 1868. In Henderson County, Texas in 1869 Lurena married W.P. Lucas. In Tarrant County, Texas in 1910 Lurena married Calvin (Colvin) B. Gentry and he died in 1912 I believe. Sorry I am on my laptop and do not have the data in front of me.

Again Thanks John For Your Response. Russ Norris
