18th Missouri infantry Col Shelton

I was wondering if you knowledgeable folks could point me in the right direction on some research. I'm currently working on putting my home on the National Register Of Historic places.

My house was built by the son of Col. William Shelton of the 18th Missouri Infantry and was the site of a Soldiers reunion in 1889.

I've just found some information on happenings in Putnam County Missouri during the civil war years in the Missouri Digital Archives...

..this has me very intrigued. None of this stuff is in the collections of the local historical society.

I've searched around a bit for info on the Copperhead Society in my part of Missouri (Putnam County) and can find very little. I'm going to do the newspaper archive thing at the local library this weekend, but was wondering if there are any good books on the subject. My searches aren't coming up with much that I'm sure would be useful. I'm sure part of this comes from my unfamiliarity with the subject.

Does anyone here have a good suggestion for me?
