John,

Thanks for the response. Here is a chronology of the "Captain's" life with civil war yrs. unknown.

12-4-1920 dies LosAngeles, CA
12-13-1920 buried Elsberry, Lincoln, MO. Elsberry obit. mentions nothing of military service

In every record he is listed with John R or J R never simply John
I find cousins, in laws, brother from Pike, Lincoln Co. listed under Price CSA and also USA 37 EMM, 3rd MO
Cav.St.Militia.
I looked @ Dalby, John. Minnesota Civil War Soldiers, http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/roster/, Pike Home Guards, 5th
Faggs St Mil., 10 st. Militia Cav.,3rd MO Cav.St.Militia, 37th EMM, 49th EMM, 33rd Inf, 32 Inf., 1st and 2nd PEMM,
39th Inf, 49 Inf. and find no match with J, JR, Jno, John, John R.

The closest match was corp. John Thompson in Faggs 5th Co. G age 25 (off 1yr) but there is also a John Thompson b1836 PA
living in Lincoln, CO that matches him better because no middle init., and there is a brother of this John
Thompson PA that enrolled on same date and same company, plus matches age. There was also a captain John Thompson from Houston Co. MN but he was already on the 1857 state census born in Canada. I didnt look @ WI soldiers closely since his inlaws move to MN in 1860 and there was no John R Thompson. However there were 7 John Thompson's but none ranked above corp.

There are 2 biographies of a son written 50 and 90 yrs. in IL after the CW, in which I found errors or embellishments (like cousin to Allen Thurmond VP candidate, personally knowing Buffalo Bill Cody, Mark Twain, and O Henry. Thus I dont put
much credit towards him having "served in US army as a captain of a. company which he raised for the service".
However, I want to prove or disprove it. thanks
