Thanks for the information and links. I was born and raised in downtown Burr and recently retired and moved back to Ripley County. Burr or Dry Springs was on the Belleuve Road that led from Van Buren, MO to Pocahontas, AR and was well used by troops during the "War of Northern Aggression". I had never heard of the skirmish at the Pulliam Farm until I started following this discussion board a few years ago.
I find the locations of William and Ben Pulliam's land quite interesting since the location that local legend claims was the site of the skirmish wasn't recorded in the land office until 1888. William's land is located about 2 1/2 miles due East of the spot and is located on the West Fork of Forsche. Ben's 40 ac. is down Dry Creek about 2 miles. The land that was there is mostly covered by a lake. Our farm is also a part of this same lake. Ben's other land recorded in 1861 is closest to the spot but still over a mile west. Does the O.R. ever mention the Pulliam Farm as being the site of the skirmish? Do all of the references to the Pulliam Farm come years after the war where they would have used who currently was living there as a way of describing its location, not who was living there at the time of the event? Was this site occupied by the Pulliam's many years before it was recorded? We may never know the spot but it will be interesting to pursue.
