As a brief addendum to my previous post, I should note that besides my own work and the one in the works by Eddy Davison and Daniel Foxx for Pelican Publishers, there is also a book by Anthony Arthur due out next year from Random House called, “To Mexico and Back: The Epic Journey of Confederate General Jo Shelby and His Iron Brigade.” I have a feeling though given what I’ve heard about it that it is basically going to be a popular retelling of Shelby and the expedition, probably in the vain of Daniel O’Flaherty’s biography of Shelby, or Davis’ Fallen Guidon. Even so, it is nice to see Shelby as well as the end of the war period in the Trans-Mississippi getting some wider coverage.
