Re: Burning of Barnesville, Reynolds Co.

John, thanks for the help. I will dig further into this as it fits quite well. James had an uncle named Joshua C. Morris. Joshua's first marriage was to one of Seth Hyatt's daughters, sister to the wife of L.N. Farris. Uncle Joshua had homesteaded just up the creek from William George and Nancy Morris. James had a sister named Ellender who married George Pennington. George Pennington and James' wife Julia were brother and sister. William George Morris, the father of these siblings had died in 1857. The mother of the Morris siblings, Nancy (Harris)Morris died in 1860. James and Alfred were said to have flipped a coin over their inheritence. At stake was 120 acres of the farm, the mill on the spring branch and this included almost all of the bottomland vs. William George's rifle. James was married, Alfred wasn't. James and Alfred had minor siblings that had to be supported. The coin was flipped, James won the toss and chose the rifle. Alfred got the farm and the kids. He never did marry. I have a copy of a hand written deed where soon after the war was over James and Julia Morris and George and Ellender Pennington transferred title to their portion of the inheritence to L.N. Farris and his wife. After the second burning of the courthouse at Centerville in the 1870's L.N. and his wife transfer title back to Alfred. It is my theory that these deed transfers, dated several years apart, both took place at the same time and were to clear title to land that was going to be sold for taxes that didn't get paid during or right after the war. I've tagged over 35 service record cards that I need to look at. Of the list of Reynolds county war widows identified by the 1870 census over 25 are directly related to these people. This doesn't count the relatives in the surrounding counties. My wife and I are attempting the process of recording a family history centered around these widows and their families. Thanks again for your efforts and please forgive me for being so longwinded.
