The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: novel about Shelby in Mexico

I did find a website about his funeral in the Kansas City area: He died 1897 and is buried in Forest Hill Cem. on hillside where his last stand in the Civil War was fought during the Battle of Westport while he was defending the rear for Gen. Sterling Price's raiding army through, and out of MO.

This stated his "funeral procession was the largest to present day that the city ever saw."

The article states Shelby was a hemp farmer from Waverly, MO. He had raised his first cavalry unit during the 1850's KS/MO Border Wars.

This site was from the bios on: http://www.wherethecivilwarbegan.com/bios.cfm
I simply typed "J.O. Shelby funeral in Kansas City" and found lots of interesting information.

It also stated he and U.S. Grant were the 2 military geniuses from MO, both were born elsewhere, but lived more of their lives in MO than anywhere else.
