These killings have been much discussed at family reunions since I was a small child. The men said that the family certainly knew the men who did the killings, and one story, probably wishful thinking, said that family members tracked the killers down in the Cherokee Strip and killed them. The family men said the Adams men were "home on furlough" when they were killed, but I have previously found no evidence that they were in regular army units. I do not know why Bill Adams was not with the others when they were killed, or whether he was there but managed to escape.
