McConnell entered the Academy in July of 1856, and resigned January 8, 1857 due to “deficiency in studies”. National Archives Cadet Application Papers show that in November of 1855 his Uncle, Thomas White, made application on his behalf for an appointment to the Military Academy, and Congressman John Covode recommended him to the Secretary of War. According to Academy records, his mother was the only parent, ‘Occupation of parent’ given was: “Lawyer”, and Thomas White was listed as his guardian.
