Re: Road to Jefferson City
In Response To: Road to Jefferson City ()

Judy--I live in California, MO and can add a little. In early days roads had no formal names but were called at any given point by where the road would take you. For example, roads leaving California were called the Russellville Road, High Point Road, Versailles Road, Boonville Road, etc. Jefferson City Road could be taken from the Moniteau County Courthouse in California to Jefferson City. A portion of this, still called Jefferson City Road, continues to exist within California. This road existed before the Pacific Railroad extended to California from Jefferson City to California in the 1850s, after which the road stayed generally south of the railroad close to old Highway 50 (before the fourlane). It could very well be that the road leading from Russellville to Jefferson City was also called "the Jefferson City Road." It may be of interest that Confederate General Price fought an engagement with federal troops south of Jefferson City in early October, 1864. This took place near the present Highway 54 bridge over the Moreau River. After this, the Confederate army split into three parts. The first took the most direct road to Boonville on the south side of the river. The second took the road to California, where an engagement took place around October 11. This took place just east of California were the Jefferson City Road crosses the Pacific Railroad. The federal cavalry came down the Jefferson City Road and attempted, unsuccessfully, to seize the Confederate baggage train. The third Confederate force took the road leading from Jefferson City through Russellville before turning north, where all parts of the army reunited at Boonville. John Kay
