Ralph, that brief posting of the history of the 3rd Mo. Cavalry (Coloton Greene's Regiment) has many errors in it that have been typically confused with this unit designation. Colton Greene Organized the 3rd Missouri Cavalry in the Winter and Spring of 1863, part of which had been in action prior to its completion as an organization. Through its history the regiment served in what became known as Marmadukes Brigade. The 3rd Cavalry mentioned as being organized in the fall of 1862 near Newtonia is that of Shelby's Brigade also known numberically as the 6th/11th Mo. Cavalry. I have been working on the roster of Greenes regiment and from what I have thus far the name Byrd does not appear. However, that is always a problem with the CSR's and the after action reports and returns. Names are mispelled, aren't included in the roster, especially if they are youngsters below the lawful age required by law for enlistment etc. To date there are no consolidated returns of casualties for the confederate forces at either Mine Creek or Westport. What we have at present is a creation of statement of losses as pieced together from newspapers and later returns from the various organizations which often do not tells us where exactly the man was lost or when during the Price Raid. Eventually we will get it sorted out.
