I have read some of this before. I think there is a lot of confusion. The family history(written by apparently some Leach relatives) says "James Maxwell", but I think a comma was left out because, my great-great grandfather was James C. Leach and his brothers were George Maxwell Leach and Levi Jasper Leach. In the 1850 Cape County, MO census page 423, entry 178, states:
Leech, Joseph 37
Cecilia 40
George M 15
Matilda E. 14
Catherine 12
James C. 9
Levi J. 7
Julia Ann 5
Rebecca 3
Amanda Alzan 1

The little girl, Mary Ann that James C. and Martha had was my great-grandmother. (I don't know if anyone is interested but will mention it in case someone else doing genealogy on the Leach family. The little girl married C. C. Williams. His name was Christopher Columbus Williams but he went by Lum Williams of Carter Co.)
