Re: Foster Martin's Federal Militia

I take it that the Sandy Vaughn you refer to is this one:

Sandy VAUGHN
Birth: 20 Jan 1829 in Virginia
Note: Sandy was in Foster Martin's Federal Militia during the war according to the History the war according to the History of Callaway Co. 1888, P.791.

Father: Bannister William VAUGHAN b: 1796 in Halifax, Virginia, USA
Mother: Martha WILSON b: 28 May 1801 in Halifax, Virginia, USA

Marriage 1 Elizabeth M. BULLARD b: in Missouri, USA
Married: 7 Nov 1850

NARA T-9, Reel 676, 1880 U.S. Census, Boone Co., MO, Cedar Township, p. 54r, #41/41: Vaughn, Sandy, W, m, 49, Farmer, VA/VA/VA; Elizabeth, W, f, 48, Wife, Keeping house, MO/VA/VA; Georgia A., W, f, 14, Daughter, MO/VA/MO; Ed B., W, m, 12, Son, Farm hand, MO/VA/MO; Robt., W, m, 10, son, MO/VA/MO; Ina, W, f, 7, Daughter, MO/VA/MO

In which case I suspect the following:

Foster Martin Jr was a Sargent, Co D, 61st Enrolled Missouri Militia. This unit was raised in Boone Co, the home county for both Vaughn and Martin. Of note, the Martin family was a pioneer family to Boone County and Martin Foster Sr. was a private in Hickman's 1st Regt Mounted Volunteers during the Black Hawk War. This Hickman is the same for which Columbia-Hickman High school is named after. Foster Martin Jr.'s service card is here:

Searching the SOS database for Vaughn does not give us any leads nor does a manual search of the 61st EMM roster gives us anything close. Thus I can not vouch for his claim in the biogaphical section of the History of Callaway Co.

He is found in the 1850 census in his parents household in District 8 Boone County aged 20 and he got married later that year in Callaway County Missouri. He is found with wife in Callaway County in 1870 and 1880.

Others can fill you in on the 61st EMM activities but in brief they were stationed in and around Boone County. Of interest is the story of David Guitar, Gen. Odon Guitar's younger brother who was apparently in both the 61st EMM as a Captain and also a Captain under Sterling Price duiring his 1864 invasion (along with a bunch of others from Co B 61st EMM)
