Bruce,
According to what I've learned, President Johnson earlier had pardoned all involved in the rebellion except for a few who fell into one or more of 14 specific categories. Those excluded apparently included Pauline White.
I see the ending of the Civil War is generally given as April 9, 1865, the day Gen. Robert E. Lee capitulated at Appomattox, but the last sizable Confederate force did not surrender until June 23, 1865, which is the date Eakins gives for Pauline White’s presidential pardon. One wonders if the surrender of that last sizable Confederate force brought about the president's decision to pardon the remaining rebels held in U.S. prisons. Can you tell me if Eakins is still among the living. I'd like to know what she has to say about the lost or missing pardon.
