62nd was involved with the founding of Lincoln Institute now Lincoln University in Jeff City MO during the war! see :

There is a black male George Mitchell working as a lead miner in the 1880 census in Breton Twsp, Washington Co. MO dwelling 45 with mulatto wife Susan and 3 children, Mary, John, and James. James age 9 is listed as an "idiot".
