Re: Newbie looking for Jo Shelby

I think i can help you a little bit about Richard Spain. Firstly, he was actually in MacDonalds command, one of those that joined his outfit in late September. The early organization of MacDonalds was known as the Provo Regiment. Richard Spain was severely wounded at the Battle of Springfield in the shoulder. He was left behind at the end of the Battle on January 9, 1863 and seems to have died at the hospital there later in the month. Hospital Records are scarce. The Trans-Mississippi Order Book, has a list of casualties for that action and Richard Spain is listed. If he did indeed die at Springfield, which is very likely considering that half the men left there later died, then he will be buried in the National Cemetery there in an unmarked grave.
