Reading Shattuck's report again, we can see that the Union patrol killed John Land near the mouth of the Buffalo River, which is in Arkansas. You may wish to post your query on the "Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board." I don't recall ever seeing anything on a Missouri guerrilla in SE Missouri by that name.
