I noticed the inconsistencies in the geography of that report. The Buffalo River in Arkansas empties into the White River I believe, very nice to float by the way. I think, he may have been referring to a Buffalo Creek that empties into the Current in south Ripley county if memory serves. Given 10 miles up the creek from the Current would have placed him, dare I say, near the Ponder Farm site, close to the Oregon Ripley County line, if I have the right creek in mind. The John J Land of Quantril fame is also known as John Lund and is easily found age 21 on his father's farm in Saline County in 1850/60. I suspect that John Land of Shattuck's report is a John Land that lived in Fulton County Arkansas, a county just southwest of Ripley Co MO in 1860 age 21.

Missourt SOS gives us this card, also listed in NPS system

8th Battalion Missouri Infantry, with a bunch of boys in Co E enlisting in Oregon Co Missouri and at Horsehead Arkansas with a number of "desertions" from the unit early spring of 1863. If you draw a line from Oregon County MO to Horsehead Arkansas you pass through Fulton Co.

I've not found a land(dirt) listing owned by a Land(person) in Ripley county yet.
