Re: Mo. River Steamboats during the "Border War"

I am working on a book about MO Steamboating, particularly around Hermann, MO, but using the Gasconade and Osage Rivers too. I have many books on MO & MS R. steamboating, if one cares to write directly to me for titles. I had recent surgery, so don't want to lift out the box right now.

If one wishes to tour an 1854-56 steamboat closer to Mid-MO, go to "The Arabia", at the Old Market in Kansas City Area. They have also preserved all the supplies aboard. It was slated to start unloading the ordered wares at St. Joeph, but didn't get that far. They have a wonderful museum with preserved and restored artifacts of frontier life, including the Forts and the families going to join husbands at their military posts. Parts of the boat, including the paddle wheel are displayed in the museum.

Food, perfumes and other items stored in bottles and jars were still edible/smellable when the cargo was raised.

"The Arabia" went down in 5 minutes, the only casualty, a mule tied to a plow. The boat was raised from many feet down in a silted-over corn field after the change of the MO R. channel.
