I'm doing some research myself, and thought I'd add to the discussion that Col. Penick's 5th was considered as bad as the Jayhawkers when it came to treatment of Jackson County families they saw as pro-south. The case I'm most familiar with it was the treatment of Jeptha Crawford (murdered) and his family (burned out), which led to the story of Riley Crawford (and probably at one brother) who THEN began riding and killing with Quantrill. He was just one of many examples of young men who did not join the guerrillas until given good cause.
