Re: Engagements? 60th Regiment EMM Co C

Stemont and hrf,

Thanks, Homer, for filling in the census details that I failed to find. Good work!

Armed with Mr. Shrum's military service record and census we can start to piece together his life in Missouri during the war.

We can tell very little about Guyon Shrum's military lift. His Company C of the 60th was formed late (6 Dec 62), as the EMM program began in late July 1862. Bates County was strongly southern in sympathy, and many of its young men went off to southern service in the war. Therefore, it must have been difficult to raise even one company of EMM there. It is possible that Shrum felt compelled to enroll in the EMM company at Butler in order not to face repercussions as a southern man, but we don't know. I say that because his record shows that he mustered with his company, but his record shows no other service.

Using Homer's clues in the Ancestry.com records we know that in late August and early September 1863 when rural Bates County was forcefully depopulated by notorious General Orders Number 11, Shrum and family and neighbor kid Eliza Ann Thomas moved to Cooper County miles to the east where they lived for some time. It appears Shrum's brief spell with the 60th EMM in Bates County was the only military service he performed in the war, but we cannot be certain. That is a touching story that Eliza's Confederate veteran dad returned to his ruined farm and spent years tracking down what happened to his missing wife and daughter.

Stemont, that's about all I can add. Any questions?

Bruce
