Several residents of Oregon, Shannon, Carter and Reynolds Counties, some of whom had been members of the MSG in 1861, enlisted during Feb. of 1862 in Company I of the 4th Reg. Inf. Vol. The 4th was very active and saw considerable service in 1862 and 1863. While looking at individual records of members of this company I noticed that several had deserted on the same date, July 7, 1863. It does not appear to have been a mass desertion of the entire company, however, a large number appear to have left on this date. Is there significance to this date that I am overlooking? Was something more than the usual happening at home that brought them back across the River?
Forgive my ignorance,
