Moses Isenhower and The Civil War

MOSES W. ISENHOWER

MOSES W. ISENHOWER
(his War Record)
Isenhower, Moses W.
Enlisted name: Isonhower, Moses W. Pvt.
Confederate, : "Company I, the eleventh Arkansas Infantry Regiment confederate States Of America.
Enlisted 29 of October, 1861, at Mount Ida, Montgomery County, Arkansas.
Enlisted under Capt. Cunningham. He gave his age at 35 but he was 38.

In November 1861 he spent a week on the Tennesee shore assisting the construction of Batteries laid out by
topographical engineers, under Asa Gray. At the end of the month, his regiment was ferried across to Island
number ten, locating at Fort Thompson.
(Previously, they sent their guns to New Orleans, Louisiana for reboring.
The weapons were so poorly prepared, that most of them burst upon firing.)
Polk requested six hundred rifles for the 11th regiment.

On February 16, 1862, Moses W, Isenhower suffered a serious head wound and died at Fort Thompson.
He had only served four months, and, strange as it may seem, he died within about seventy miles from
where he was born, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri.

From Betty Snyder:
Moses Isenhower was a private in Co. I , 11th Arkansas Infantry. #4490 5629 & #5707
He entered Co. I, at Little Rock, Arkansas, Oct. 29 in 1861. At that time he was in Montgomery County and listed as Coroner,
1861-1862. He traveled 50 miles to Little Rock. He listed his age as 35, but he was 38. He enlisted for one year but he was
killed at Fort Thompson February 16 1862, on Islaand #10.

His family:
MOSES W. ISENHOWER and AMANDA M. McKINNEY

Moses W. Isenhower was the son of John and Sarah Isenhower. He was the fifth child of seven children. Probably in the
latter part of 1820 his parents moved from North Carolina to Cape Girardeau County, Missouri^1.
The two older children were born in North Carolina; the five younger children were born in Missouri.
[The Eakers Journal Vol.II gives evidence of produce bought and work completed for Mr. Eakers by John, Moses and Valentine.

[ The father died in 1844 and for some reason, Moses sold his part of the estate and moved to Arkansas^2. ]
Moses married Amanda M. McKinney in 1846 in Montgomery County, Arkansas. They made their home in Sulphur Springs Township. Record shows his brothers Barnett and Valentine and his sister Sarah Emmaline Trammell living in Townships in Montgomery County, Arkansas, also. Did they move at the same time or did one go and the rest follow? My reasoning is : Josiah became a business man in his early twenties, traveling to New Orleans, LA., and perhaps other parts of the world. He never married so the mother did not live with him. The mother was left a widow in 1844. She was appointed guardian for fifteen year old Sarah Emmaline, child #7, and chose to move with her sons to Arkansas. Josiah told some of his friends that his mother died while he was living in Louisiana^3.

Sarah, the mother died as she was moving to Texas with her daughter Emmaline in 1852. Another daughter was with them.

The 1840 census of Cape Girardeau County, Missouri shows Mahala [child #1 married to Enos Johnson and the mother of four children from 0-10 years.]

In 1854 Enos M. Johnson is listed as the Justice of the Peace in Montgomery County Arkansas in the Township of Polk. He performed the wedding ceremony for his brother Valentine and Margeret Ann Hendrix, in 1854 in Montgomery County Arkansas. Valentine is listed as 31, but he was 33 and she was 18. Probably close to 19 as in the 1850 Census she was listed as 15 years old, and in the 1860 Census she is listed as 25 years of age; in the same census Valentine is listed as 40 years of age.
In 1860 the Johnson’s were still in Arkansas. Note: Enos M. Johnson has a separate record.

In 1847, 12th day of June, Sarah Emmaline Isenhower and Lewis Trammell were married by James N. May, Justice of the Peace. Mr Trammell was 23 and Sarah Emmaline was 18.

The 1850 Arkansas census lists Lewis and Sarah E. Trammell with Valentine's daughters, Margaret C. age 7 and Sarah M. age 4. Sarah E. being 20 years old and born in Missouri.
[Margaret C. and Sarah M. are her brother Valentine's children. Sarah M. is also listed with her father, but not Margaret C.]

Valentine married wife #2 Miss Margaret 3 Sept, 1854, age 18 years.[ this is Margareta who was listed with him in 1850] One child was listed with him also in the 1850 Arkansas census : Valentine 29, Margareta 15, b. in Alabama, and Sarah age 4. Margaret C. isn't listed. [We think Margareta was a sister to Valentine's first wife. and was probpbly living with them in Missouri when his first wife died.]

In the year of 1846, five Isenhower children were in Arkansas they are: Mahala, Moses, Barnett, Valentine
and Sarah Emmaline. Valentine and a M.W. Isenhower is listed in an official book of Montgomery Ark. as late as 1861.

M.W. listed as Coroner.
Martha ( Patty) was married to William Blalock in 1843

Josiah E.Isenhower was a deputy clerk at the Court House in Jackson, Missouri. Later he became a Clerk for
Mr. Brevand and Mr. Gayle, then he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he became a member of the firm of
Horrell, Gayle & Co. and spent twenty years there. He died in 1868.

William and Martha signed a paper in 1846, paying Polly Kinder money owed her by John Isenhower who died in 1844.
