The Cyrus A. Peterson papers might shed some light on Talbot. That'd be a pretty hefty amount of documentation to wade through, but he's probably lurking in those files somewhere, if the lore regarding the bushwhacking is accurate. Peterson made a huge effort to document the SEMO Civil War story and collected all sorts of obscure references to locals. Talbot's pre-war escapades would likely have captured Peterson's attention, as would Talbot's ultimate demise if he was in fact bushwhacked at home by Federals, or was the victim of some sort of local vigilante pay-back by kinsmen of the man Talbot killed before the war. I still do a little bit of original research on Hildebrand--if Talbot surfaces, I'll let you know.
