Columbia Tigers
In Response To: Re: Confederate Flag ()

Probably doesn't belong to the Columbia Tigers.... The Columbia Tigers was a Federal militia force formed specifically on the orders of Radical Unionist General Clinton B. Fisk. Its commanding officer was a United States Congressman and its second in command was a Radical Unionist. Its mission at Columbia was no different than dozens of other Federal militia units called up during Price's Raid. An armed, neutralist force of militia formed in Columbia at the time would not have lasted very long, side-by-side with the Third Missouri State Militia Cavalry.... Nor, given its Radical component, would it have been likely to have adapted a Confederate flag for its own use.

The Columbia Tigers existed for just three weeks. It was formed in early October 1864 in response to Price's Raid, and due to locally-based Federal forces being pulled out of Boone County and Columbia and sent down to man the ramparts at Jeff City. The Centralia Massacre had just occurred, and the townspeople of Columbia sent entreaties to Federal authorities not to leave the town unprotected. As a result a company of the Third MSM Cavalry was left there, and the Federal militia force named the Columbia Tigers was formed. After Price had passed and Federal volunteers (42nd Missouri Infantry) were sent to re-garrison Columbia in the latter half of October, the Tigers disbanded.
