You came along at just the right time. I'd know about the book for a long time. The day before yesterday I finally decided to buy it.
It's no longer in print, but found it on-line through Goggle, which I added to my Bookmarks folder.

Then, the next day, you arrive, Eureka!

It answers a number of questions I had re muster rolls, descriptive lists, etc. My interest is on the Confederate side, but, both armies
derived in the old army and Confederate requirements were essentially identical.

Most units were constantly on the go and had no way, or requirements to investigate the fate of those absent and those left far behind.
