In my years of reading abstracts of title to lands in Moniteau and nearby counties, I have noted that many farms were sold on the Courthouse steps in foreclosure for failure to pay a lien for a state "Military Tax". Often the foreclosed liens were for amounts under $10.00. Although I have not fully researched this, it appears to me, being somewhat familiar with the family names involved, that the "Military Tax" was enforced only against "disloyal" farmers who, for that reason, were not considered entitled to the equal protection of the law.
