Scott,

Neil is so right. This work is now in the public domain as far as copyright permissions are concerned.

Please seriously consider adding to the body of knowledge by having a Missouri-Colorado regional publisher such as Two Trails Publishing or Camp Pope Bookshop re-publish the annotated work. Otherwise, someone will purchase your original, annotated book, it will sit on their shelf for a few years, and their family will pitch it out as "some old book grandpa bought from some guy." Some of us can tell you sad stories about such one-of-a-kind literature that disappeared forever.

There is not much first-person 2nd Colorado Cavalry Regiment literature around to tell their story. Those "Mountain Boomers" saw rough action and were one of the few Federal regiments to earn the written expression of grudging respect from several of Quantrill's guerrillas in their postwar memoirs.

Do what you think best, because this is a free country, but you have a chance to provide something unique to many of us who care deeply by re-publishing with the added remarks. Your name would be on it, and you would benefit from modest royalties for years to come. Call it a legacy.

Please excuse my hard sell, but what you have is important for several reasons. I congratulate you on your good fortune.

Bruce Nichols
