The Missouri in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Claiborne Fox Jackson Defense Bond

Do you have a cite that the Plattsburg defense bonds were Confederate? Seems more likely that they were Union.
Thank you, Alan, for your reply. I found this statement on beastcoins.com, in the 4th entry under Missouri. It is a reference to a book, "A Guide Book of Southern States Currency," by Hugh Shull. Here is the entire note text on beastcoins.com in reference to a Missouri, Jefferson City - $1 State of Missouri (Defence Bond): On p.213 of Hugh Shull's book "A Guide Book of Southern States Currency", it is specifically noted "It is possible that this series of notes was never actually issued as virtually all notes seen to date (book published in 2007) have been unissued remainders or have had fictitious signatures. However, there is one piece of anecdotal information that suggests they may have been used. An account of the Confederate guerrilla attack on Plattsburg, Missouri, on July 21, 1864, includes the comment that the guerrillas (whose number included none other than Jesse James) liberated $10,000 in Missouri Defence Bonds that they found in the courthouse. The rub is that it is not clear whether these were the low-denomination Defence Bonds or the $100 and $500 Defence Bonds. In any case, notes that have genuine signatures and other issuance information are worth a significant premium over those that do not." This note concludes with the following statement: Unfortunately, I have not yet found information leading to any "genuine signatures" to compare to my notes, however, I showed my notes to Hugh Shull at a show and he said the signatures, date and serial number are spurious.
Hope this helps.
