I would apply for the marker.
As far as the Union was concerned, he had an honorable discharge.
Desertion was a term that was applied usually when a man was not present and they
had no idea where he had gone to.
My ancestor who fought with the 5th Tenn. CSA has the word deserter on his records and he
stayed with the CSA to the end. He also has a government marker.
