I just happened to stumble across your name. I read your book and thoroughly enjoyed it, and appreciate your point of view. My great-grandfather was James M. Williams, who commanded Company F in the Third Regiment of Lane's Brigade, later, Company F, Fifth Kansas Cavalry; 1st Kansas Colored Volunteer Infantry Regiment; and 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 7th Corps. As much as I've been able to discern from my studies, he was an unabashed Jayhawker. But I have seen no evidence that he committed any of the atrocities for which some of the others in Lane's Brigade were famous. He was definitely aggressive, and never ran from a fight.
Thanks again for your book. It goes a long way toward balancing the bias.
