Re: 13th Illinois Cav Ste. Gen. County Dec. 1862

I know that your story is taking place in 1862 but, by June or July of 1864, anyway, sometime after Elihu Shepard buried his wife, she had died on June 6, 1864, Elihu Sheppard says that he returned to his farm at Kaolin, in Iron County, and soon after his return was robbed by a band of 11 guerrillas.. and later in the story tells us that the leader of this group was one William Carty (or Devil Bill, as he was called.)Brother of Greenberry Carty.

William Cartee (Carty) may not have been an unwilling guide.
