Captain Thomas Phelan, 7th Missouri Regiment,Union

My great, great uncle Thomas Phelan fought with the 7th Missouri Regiment for the entire Civil War rising to the rank of Captain by the end of the war. According to his obituary he remained in the army, and organized Company D of the 3rd regiment, and remained in the army for many years. His wife Alice (Cox) Phelan and his children lived in Kansas City, Missouri. He became superintendent of the workhouse in Kansas City, was police chief of Washington, DC, was stabbed in NY City for exposing a plot to blow up a British steamer, and fought in the Fenian Raid in Canada. At the time of his death he was the superintendent of the Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington.

I have found little else on this colorful character in my family's history, but most especially about his military career. If anyone has any information or a photo of him, I would love to hear from you.
