James Davis - guerrilla???

I'm trying to help someone find out what happened to James Davis and what unit or guerrilla band he was with. He, his mother and siblings were all living in Newton County in 1860. Several of his brothers joined the Union army. One of them, Philip R. Davis, was in the 76th EMM and then the 15th Missouri Cavalry. Below are a couple of quotes from his pension application:

In P.R. (Philip R.) Davis' pension records is the following information about James:
quoting from the deposition of Harriet Davis Waughtal, daughter of P.R. Davis: "I know he never believed in the Confederate cause. His own brother Jim, who was in the Confederate army watched three days around our home to kill my father because he wouldn't join the confederate army."

quoting from the deposition of James M. Ritchey, Capt. Co. K, 15th MO Cav: "...also a brother Jim Davis who was in Confederate service or a Bushwhacker, and was killed near the Missouri and Arkansas state line in the winter of 1863 or spring of 1864. I know so by being present and seeing his dead body."

Any help is greatly appreciated.
