In Response To: Re: Chester Street Prison ()

Thanks for the help, Gary. Chester Street Prison was in St. Louis. I found a drawing of it on the web. I thought I had saved the URL, but now I can't find it, so unfortunately I can't share it. It was at the corner of 6th and Chester Street, directly behind and connected to the police station. It appears to have been a rectangular, five story building, five windows wide, of undetermined length. I can send a copy of the drawing, if anyone wants it. Gary has been helping me try to determine the war history of John Christison of Livingston County, Missouri. His record has been mixed with the record of John L. Christeson of Pulaski County, Missouri on some postings on the web. I have an old provost document that I found in the "Unfiled Papers of the Compiled Records of Confederate Soldiers," at the Arkansas History Commission. It's only partially legible, but from what I can tell, it says that John Christison stated that he participated in three battles under Price - at Carthage, Lexington, and either Spring Hill, or Springfield, and that he was under arms with a Mississippi rifle at the time. It also says that he enlisted on June 11, 1861, with, I believe, a Captain Stone, and after Stone's death at Carthage, with Captain Charles Cooper. I can't find anything about a Captain Stone, but it seems that Charles Cooper divided his time between bushwhacking around Livingston County and serving with the 15th Cavalry. I can't seem to find much about the 15th Cavalry, although I understand that Timothy Reaves was part of this command. Besides the provost record of John's arrest, I have the prison record that Gary mentioned, which came from the Registor Of CSA Prisoners From Arkansas and Tennessee Taken By Union Forces, where he is listed twice. The first listing shows him as dying January 30, 1862, with no cause given, and lists Chester Street, St. Louis, as the place of death. The second listing is 2 spaces down on the list, and shows him as a prisoner of war, dying on January 2, of pneumonia and lists the place of death as Dept. of Mo. I also have a muster card, which shows him as a private, admitted to City General Hospital, USA, St. Louis on December 11, 1861, suffering from Rubella, and giving the date of his death as January 2. He is shown on the Jefferson Barracks site as having died on January 3, 1862 and having been buried there the same day. According to what's on the web, John Christison enlisted at Utica, Livingston County, Missouri. To set the record straight, John L. Christeson from Pulaski County, Missouri, enlisted at Batesville, Arkansas on August 6, 1862, in Co G, 10th Infantry Missouri and died on July 14th, 1863 at Moro Arkansas, aproximately 20 miles NW of Helena. If anyone can shed any light on who John Christison served with and whether it is more likely that it was Spring Hill, or Springfield that he fought at, I would appreciate hearing from them.
