Thanks to Ms. Buhr suggestion I found a website that quotes the official version of the 1st Kansas Coulored Infantry's battle against bushwackers in Mo. www.iwfam.net . Has Ms. Buhr points out these troops were state not federal troops although latter they were absorbed by the USCT. The Kan troops had a Afro-American Lt which was unheard of in the civil war at that time. The 1st Kan defeated a larger force of Bushwackers.
