Green's Brigade at Vicksburg

I have an ancestor (uncle), John Luther Martin, who was a member of the 1st Missouri Cavalry CS (Gates). He was a fifty-year old man when he joined the regiment shortly after the battle of Pea Ridge. He transferred East with this unit and was present at Port Gibson, Champions Hill and Big Black River. I have a good grasp of his service in the aforementioned engagements, but because Green's Brigade was used as a reserve at Vicksburg, I have a more difficult time understanding their service in the siege of Vicksburg. Can anyone recommend a bibliography that has a good history of the 1st Missouri Cavalry (Dsmtd) CS during the siege and/or of Green's brigade?

BTW, my uncle did not survive the siege and appears to have died of disease or exposure prior to the surrender. As a fifty-five year old myself and being familiar with ferocity of the fighting by Green's brigade at Port Gibson, Champions Hill and the escape across the Big Black, it's no wonder his health failed him.

Thanks for any responses.

Jim Martin
