Head Quarters Third Military District, EMM
Assistant Adjutant General's Office
Cape Girardeau, Mo. January 18, 1865
To: Brig. Gen. S. P. Simpson
Adjt. General Mo.
Gen'l.
There are in this district five companies of six month volunteer EMM raised and organized under Special Orders No. 89 Head Quarters State of Missouri, St. Louis June 10, 1864. The time of Company C expired on the 24th ultimo and three others will expire within a month. The regiments from which they volunteered have been relieved from active service so that were they to report back to their original companies, the State would be deprived of their service. What shall I do with them? Muster them out or retain them in the service?
I have the honor to be, General, your obt. serv't P. R. Gaulding Maj. A. A. Gen'l.
I have researched the Missouri Militias extensively for several years. Their records are scattered from one end of the country to the next, seldom with duplication. As such, finds are accidental and require years of interpretation as nothing can be taken for granted. Some primary source material I discovered five years ago is just now making sense. One must not be critical if there are some gaps or holes and I am not holding anything back. Good luck in your research. I will need your address next week. Bob
