The role of the Native American in the CW is complex. Its hard to imagine that the Cherokees who were forced into exile from Georgia would fight for a country that did not even deem them worthy of citizenship at least at the time of the CW. My understanding of why many native Americans joined the IHG was because the CSA would forcibly conscript tribesmen who in return would rather fight for the side that was not concripting them. Alvin Josephy in his book "Civil war in the West" went into quite a bit of detail about the divided politics of the IT . I am not claiming that I understood it all there was a lot of internal conflict. I didn't know that there were CSA NA units involved with Quantrill or Livingston. Leslie and Stiles didn't mention them but maybe some new historical research has come out. I am very interested in the role of Native Americans in the CW and appreciate all information that is presented to me.
