William Quantell was a true leader, and as may of you have spoken, he and his men did have a crude form of Democracy. Many occasions Quantrell was away seeking his commission, supplies, etc. His Lieutentant's were his most trusted men, and men like Cole Younger, George Todd and John Thrailkill were also there to keep others in line. It was common for these men to take a rest from battle, many of them went into the Texas Pecos River valley to spend the winter away from the cold Missouri climate.
Bill Anderson, was from Clay county and the Clay county rebels rode with him, including young Jesse James. Quantrell, sent him away as he was too young. Jesse wanted to join his brother Frank. Bill Anderson was married in Texas during a Hiatus, with most of Quantrells' men attending. Col Quatrell wasn't the only one seeking out romance in these times!

However, we cannot speak of only these few, There were so many incredible men of this group that history has forgotten, but spoken and remebered with true and tearful admiration by there more well known commrades.

Capt William Gregg- Cole Younger described him as "the bravest man he knew to ever face powder".

Charley Harrison- Bat Masterson said of him " the most brilliant pistol handlers alive" "far more a deadly shot that the great gun fighters of the old west"

John Koger(Coger) Cole Younger, in his book, Described him as "impossible to kill" having over 32 bullet wounds to his body.

There are without question, many brave men, beyond the above mentioned that were heroic, but lost in history. As many of you have read and enjoyed the books published, past and present. The stellar point is these men fought for their homes and families, most having lost everything.
