Royal: The Gatewood company, from Montevallo in Vernon County, appears to have been organized around June 1, 1861 at that location. It was temporarily assigned to the 1st Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division, MSG, at Cowskin Prairie and apparently served with that unit at Wilson's Creek. It was then assigned as Company G, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 8th Division. The 7th Cavalry next fought at Drywood Creek and Lexington. It also was engaged at Papinsville, MO, on 8 December. The company frequently operated independently along the Missouri-Kansas border, mainly in Vernon County. It appears that the regiment mustered out of state service around 12 Dec 1861.

Any chance of getting copies of the Lt Ball's letters?
